“Fruit” is only the “quick, I need a title” title of this piece, though it does, in some ways, fit. The initial concept was that of a placental bag of sorts suspended in a wooden circle. I had been thinking of the rather insect-like chryslalis structure housing growing humans in The Matrix universe, but I wanted to remove that crysalis from its bio-mechanical context. This drawing is the result of those musings. Except for the section of the branch above the leaf, the object is self-contained; knowing where “boundaries” are is often a major concern, for so few “scenes” I would like to create consist of well-defined “objects.” This image, like “The Roots of Enlightenment” and others, continues my interest in mixing plant and animal motifs. Playing with textures and surfaces was much of the fun of sketching this piece.
